R.A. Schrader Funeral Home Serving Kitwanga, Hazeltons, Smithers, Houston, and Burns Lake, BC.
The funeral home in Smithers started out as Evergreen Funeral Home in the 1950’s and was owned by the Emerson family. It was purchased by A.F. DeFrane in 1969 and operated under DeFrane Funeral Home. In 1986 it was once again sold to R.A. ‘Allan’ Schrader and the name was changed to R.A. Schrader Funeral Home.
In 1996 ownership of the funeral home changed again when Allan Schrader sold to the Lowen Group which later was bought out by Alderwoods. In 2007 Service Corporation International took over Alderwoods and became owners of the funeral home until they sold it to The Caring Group Corp. of Lethbridge, Alberta in December of 2008.
The funeral home has operated from the same location for over 60 years. Space has been added on through the years, including the 100 seat chapel, large casket and urn selection room, prep room and garage. The top floor was once a three bedroom apartment but is now being used for office space.
The relief funeral director is Paul MacDonald who formally owned Clayton Funeral Home in Quesnel, BC. Other part-time employees include Joe Garcia, John Steward, Glen Baker, Bill Kilpatrick and Donna Schrader. |
